Valiant
From Mopedia
In 1960, Chrysler introduced it's compact car as a distinct brand. This was a one year status as Dodge recieved its own version in 1961 and the Valiant became a Plymouth.

1960 Valiant 1961-1962 Plymouth Valiant
Chrysler entered the small car market in 1960 with the Valiant brand. In 1961, Valiants became a line of cars under Plymouth. There were two series. V100 was the entry level model while V200 had more trim and nylon cloth interiors.
The product selection included a four door sedan and wagon. In 1961, a two door sedan became available in the V100 line while a two door hardtop (although it was called a sedan) was added to the V200 line. In 1962, the V200 2 door reverted to a sedan body style like the V100. A new premium model, Signet 200, was introduced as a two door hardtop. It had all of the V200 goodies plus bucket seats and a padded dash.
Initially, the only engine available was the 170-cid slant six. By mid-year 1960 a short lived hyperpack became available. In mid-year 1961, the 225-cid slant six became an option.

1963-1966 Plymouth Valiant
The Valiant was restyled for 1963. All three lines survived the transformation to the smart new body. Convertibles were added to the V200 and Signet lines. 1964 and 1965 had minor trim changes but 1966 provided a front end redesign that foreshadowed the 1967 complete redesign. Establishing a trend of diminishing Valiant models, the V200 line was trimmed of 2 door models for 1966.
The 170-cid slant six was the base engine while the 225-cid slant six remained an option. For a short time in 1963 an aluminum block 225-cid slant six was available. The public was not ready for the increased maintenance of this exotic (for the time) engine and it was replaced by the standard iron block 225. In 1964 the 273, the first LA small block V8, became available in all Valiants. There was no special series for V8 cars.

1967-1973 Plymouth Valiant
1967 marked a contraction of the Valiant line. Hardtops, convertibles, and station wagons were gone leaving two and four door sedans. The V200 was dropped as a series and became a 200 decor group on the V100.All of the flash had been transferred to the Barracuda. The Signet line and two door sedans were dropped after 1969.
The 170-cid slant six was standard on V100 models while the 225-cid slant six was standard for the Signet. In 1970 the 170 was replaced by the 198-cid slant six. Both lines could be had with the 273 until 1969. The 318 V8 became an option in 1968.

1974-1976 Plymouth Valiant
The Valiant body was replaced by the larger 111" wheelbase Dart 4-door body for the 1974 model year, and ran until the end of producion in 1976. The added length was in the back seat area. A new premium series 2 door hardtop and 4 door sedan, the Brougham, was added to the Valiant line in 1974. This was an up scale small car. Brougham status was demoted to a trim package for 1976 from a seperate series for the earlier cars. All Broughms rode on the same 111" wheelbase as other Valiants. The bigger body was a success, resuting in a high level model line called Custom being added to the four door sedan in 1975. Both Customs and Broughams became trim packages on the 4 door sedan in 1976 while two door hardtops were dropped.
The 198 and 225 slant sixes and the 318 V8 carried over.

1970-1976 Plymouth Duster
Dusters were built on a 108" wheelbase and took the place of the Barracuda in the Valiant line for 1970. With most of the development budget spent on the new E body Barracuda, the success of the Duster was quite a surprise. A performance version, the Duster 340, followed the same formula as the previous year's 'Cuda. The Gold Duster appearance group was introduced in mid 1970. The Twister package was introduces in mid 1971 to provide the look of the Duster 340 without the insurance premiums. In 1975 a higher level of trim was introduced in a line called Custom which became an option group in 1976. In 1976 the Gold Duster package was replaced by the Silver Duster package. For those interested in saving fuel, a unique package called the Feather Duster added aluminum body panels and other components. 1974 saw the Duster 340 replaced by the Duster 360 which was dropped in 1976.

1971-1976 Plymouth Scamp
After the success of the Duster in 1970, Dodge wanted its own version to get in on the action. As part of the deal, Plymouth negotiated its own version of the popular Swinger. The Scamp was a sporty 2-door hardtop with similar equipment and mechanical components as the Swinger. As with all post 1967 A body hardtops, it had a 111" wheelbase. In 1972, the Canadian version of the Scamp picked up an entry level series called the Special which used the interior of the Dart Swinger Special. For 1976 the Scamp Special was offered in the U.S. at $3,337 for the six cylinder model, compared to $3,510 for the Scamp hardtop.

1960-1966 Canadian Valiant
Chrysler of Canada started production of the Valiant shortly after the American parent, offering the 4-door sedan in V-100 and V-200 series. A short time later a 4-door station wagon was added, although only the 2-seat version was available in Canada. The engine was the new 170-cid slant six. Unlike the American Valiant, the alternator was not available in Canada and the 1960 through 1962 Valiants came with a generator. The 1960 Valiant was sold at Plymouth-Chrysler-Fargo and Dodge-DeSoto dealers.
For 1961 a 2-door sedan was added to the V-100 series and 2-door hardtop to the V-200 series. This year the alternator was optional. With both the DeSoto and Dodge Polara dropped in Canada, Canadian Dodge dealers started selling Chryslers. The Canadian Valiant did not become a Plymouth for 1961, and was now sold at Plymouth-Chrysler-Valiant-Fargo and Dodge-Chrysler-Valiant dealers. As well, Canadian 1961 Valiants had the 1960 `by Chrysler` nameplate on the trunk lid instead of `by Plymouth`.
The 1962 Valiant line-up was the same as in the United States, with the hardtop moving to the new Signet 200 series and the V-200 gaining a 2-door sedan. `By Chrysler` again appeared on the trunk lid. This year the 225-cid slant six was offered as an option. It should also be pointed out that the aluminum block slant six was never offered in Canada.
Although Canadian-built V8 engines gained Chrysler`s new reduction gear starter, the slant six models retained the Prestolite direct drive starter, something that must be remembered when replaced the ring gear or torque converter as the tooth count differs for each starter. Although many consider the 1962 Valiant styling to be strange, even ugly, for Chrysler Canada it was the best selling nameplate, with the de-finned Chrysler in the number 2 spot. Both the Plymouth and Dodge Dart were sales disasters in Canada.
1963 brought in a new Valiant that in Canada coupled Dart and Valiant bodies. The Canadian Valiant, model TVX, now used the Dart body with a Valiant front clip, instrument panel and interior upholstery, although the export models used Dart-style seat upholstery. A convertible was added to the Signet 200 series, the first year Chrysler of Canada built a convertible since 1936. Also, all Canadian Chrysler products dropped the generator and offered the alternator as standard equipment.
Model line-up for 1963 was the same as in the U.S. and was still sold at Plymouth and Dodge dealers. The 1963 was still Chrysler of Canada`s best selling model with sale up over 100% with the revamped Plymouth and Dodge were now number 2 and 3.
The 1964 line-up saw the V-200 2-door sedan replaced by a 2-door hardtop and the series gained a 2-door convertible. And the interior upholstery was now the American Dart, althought the Canadian Signet replaced the `fratzog` with the Valiant `V`. In December, 1963, Chrysler began building in the 273-cid V8 in Detroit, and Chrysler of Canada began importing the engine for Canadian production. Unlike the U.S. Valiant V8, the Canadian Valiant V8 serial number began with a `7` while the six cylinder models continued with `1`. Again sales rose and the Valiant became Canada`s best selling compact.
April, 1964, brought the new Valiant Barracuda. And the name Plymouth appeared nowhere on the car, with `Valiant`on the front and rear of the car. Introduction of the new model occurred in Ontario in mid-April, and as production increased the model was introduced across the country. The centre stripe on the American Barracuda never appeared on the Canadian model.
For 1965 the number of Valiant models almost doubled with both Valiant and Dart models sold as the Valiant in Canada. All models, from the cheapest 100 2-door sedan to the Signet 2-door convertible, used the Dart instrument panel. The low-priced 100 series (same as in the U.S.) came as a 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan and wagon. The Custom 100 (same as the U.S. 200) offered a 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop and 2-door convertible. Although the American Signet was not offered in Canada, the Barracuda was, complete with Dart instrument panel. The Formula S package was sold in Canada, but was imported from Detroit.
Next up came the Dart-based models, with the 200 2-door and 4-door sedans at the bottom. Next came the Custom 200 (think Dart 270) in 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop, 2-door convertible and 4-door wagon models. Top of the heap came the Signet (aka Dart GT) in 2-door hardtop and convertible. The wind splits on the front fenders did not have the `GT` imprint and the C pillar had a Valiant `V` instead of the `GT` emblem. All 200 Valiant models had a Valiant `V` instead of the fratzog on the hood and a Valiant nameplate attached to the grille replaced the Dodge name on the hood.
Again the Valiant was Canada`s number 1 compact. A strike the lasted from January through the beginning of March in 1965 put a dent in Canadian Chrysler sales. Chrysler Canada decided to import some models from the U.S., but the resulting bad press quickly halted that move. Thus some Valiants appeared in Canadian showrooms with the Valiant instrument panel and Plymouth nameplates.
1966 was the last year for the unique Dart-based Valiant models. The small 100 and Custom 100 models were dropped, as was the station wagon. This year the Barracuda was imported from Detroit, although it appeared in Canadian showrooms without the Plymouth name anywhere on the car. As well, Chrysler of Canada began building cars for the American market, in particular Dodge Darts. And Chrysler of Canada adopted the reduction gear starter for the slant six engine.
For 1967, with the Canadian-American auto trade agreement in full force, Chrysler of Canada imported Valiant and Barracuda models for Plymouth-Chrysler dealers and Dart models for Dodge-Chrysler dealers. From 1967 through to the end of Valiant production in 1976, the Canadian Valiant line-up was almost identical to that in the U.S. The only major difference was the availability of a Scamp Special model for the 1972 model year.

1971-1976 Australian Valiant Charger
Chrysler Australia built a 2-door Valiant Charger on a 105" wheelbase. The sedans were on a 111" wheelbase. The 2-door had a squarer rear quarter window than the Scamp/Swinger along with a 1968 Charger-like roof line and rear window.
